Turning a Dream into a Reality: Inn at Tabbs Creek

Many Country Inns have their own story to tell and one of my favorite aspects of visiting a new Inn is to learn how they came to running such a business. When deciding to purchase a country inn some may have never have had experience running one, may have years of experience or just thought it would be a fun idea because another one has been successful then jumped in head first. A perfect example would be of Greg & Lori Dusenberry who own Inn at Tabbs Creek in Mathews County. This awesome couple both graduated from St. Andrew College in North Carolina with BA in Philosophy and had a dream of running an eco-friendly Inn.

Well in October of 2008 their dream became a reality when finally opening their Inn after major renovations on this 1820’s home which focused on their passion and love of the environment, organic gardening/farming and green building practices. The Dusenberry’s decided to purchase in Mathews County because of visiting family in the area for 20 years and fell in love with the areas natural beauty, small town charm and communities commitment to a controlled environment.

My husband and I visited this inn a few years ago and this was the best weekend getaway we had! As you pull up their long driveway you take in the beautiful 1820s estate and picturesque views of the water. The inn features 7 bedrooms with private baths and views of the River. You can personalize your room with a chilled bottle of local wine which we took advantage off and was perfect start to our stay. You can enjoy several outdoor and indoor amenities such as kayaking, relaxing by the pool, paddle boarding, bicycle through town, enjoy the views from the dock, stay cozy around the waterside fire pit, curl up with a book in front of the fireplace. In the morning we got to enjoy a bountiful breakfast prepared by one of the owners, Greg who also happens to be a chef. Each breakfast features organically grown produce from their garden, specialty brewed organic coffee from the local roaster and locally sourced meats from a nearby farm. Favorite meals I enjoyed were Lemon Blueberry Cornmeal Pancakes, Chorizo Hash, and Strawberry Cream Cheese French Toast Casserole. Wash it down with fresh squeezed juices, organic tea and other selections.

Once you returned from your day of fun activities, take advantage of their complimentary happy hour. This is where you wind down and socialize with others guests while tasting local wine, several delicious appetizers and if in season, Greg and Lori have home grown oysters which are phenomenal!

This secluded country inn is perfect for that weekend getaway if you want privacy, hospitality and good food. This truly is an example of how successful you can be as an Innkeeper if you just keep your dreams alive and go for achieving those goals if you put your mind to it.
